What you need
- Food-grade glycerin (VG) - dense vapor and sweetness.
- Food-grade propylene glycol (PG) - carries the flavor and gives the throat hit.
- PG-based flavor concentrates - no oils, no alcohol-based baking flavors.
- Nicotine base - only if you want strength. E-liquid can be nicotine-free.
- Syringes or a scale accurate to 0.01 g, clean dropper bottles and gloves.
Step 1. Choose the VG/PG ratio
For pods and cigalikes take 50/50: the flavor is brighter and the cotton wicks faster. For sub-ohm tanks and rebuildable atomizers take 70/30: denser vapor and a smoother draw. If in doubt, start with 50/50.
Step 2. Pick the flavors and the dosage
It is easiest to start with two or three flavors: a main one and one or two supporting notes, for example strawberry and cream. Brands differ in strength: Capella and FlavourArt are usually added at 1-4%, TPA at 3-8%. The average dosage of every flavor across thousands of recipes is in the catalog.
Step 3. Work out the components
Calculating by hand is error-prone: flavors and nicotine base contain PG too. The calculator takes that into account and gives volumes in millilitres and weights in grams.
| Component | ml | g | % |
|---|---|---|---|
| VG | 21 | 26.48 | 70 |
| PG | 7.2 | 7.46 | 24 |
| Strawberry | 1.2 | 1.24 | 4 |
| Vanilla custard | 0.6 | 0.62 | 2 |
| Total | 30 | 35.8 |
Actual: VG 70% · PG 30% · nicotine 0 mg/ml
Step 4. Mix
- Put on gloves and get a clean bottle ready.
- Pour the flavors first, then the nicotine base (if any), then PG and VG last - thick glycerin is easier to add at the end.
- If you weigh, tare the scale after every component.
- Close the bottle and shake hard for 1-2 minutes.
- Label the bottle: recipe, date and strength.
Step 5. Let it steep
Fruit and berry liquids are ready in 1-3 days; desserts, tobaccos and creams open up over 1-2 weeks. Keep the bottle in a dark place at room temperature and shake it now and then. You can vape it straight away - shake and vape - but the flavor will be simpler.
Common mistakes
- Too much flavor. The taste turns bitter and chemical. Better to add too little and top up later.
- Oil- or alcohol-based baking flavors. Oils must not be inhaled - use only PG-based concentrates.
- Technical-grade glycerin or PG. Only food-grade (pharmacopoeia) components will do.
- Measuring by eye. Even 1-2% of flavor changes the taste a lot - use syringes, a scale and the calculator.
Safety
Keep the components and the finished liquid out of reach of children and pets. Nicotine is toxic: wear gloves and wash it off your skin with water straight away. We do not sell nicotine products.
FAQ
Can I make e-liquid without glycerin?
Yes, with PG and flavors only. There will be less vapor and a harsher draw; such a liquid suits high-resistance pods.
How do I make e-liquid for a pod?
Take VG/PG 50/50 and 10-15% flavor. Thick 70/30 liquids wick worse in small coils.
What is a longfill?
A bottle partly filled with flavor concentrate that you top up with base. More in Longfill: how to mix.
Is it cheaper to make e-liquid yourself?
Usually much cheaper than ready-made liquid of the same volume: most of it is inexpensive VG and PG, and flavors are only 10-20%.
